Firkin Point
Firkin Point picnic area and car park has been developed to make use of the old
shore-hugging A82 trunk road. All of the route is surfaced and provides
excellent level walking. The car park and picnic area is open from 10am through
8pm from April to October. Outside these times there is no vehicular access to
the old road but there are other access points shown on the map.
It is possible to do a return walk of 3 miles in each direction along the shore
of Loch Lomond. If this is too far then shorter walks can be done to the
viewpoints at Rubha Dhub (0.5m north) and Rubha Mor (0.5m south), these points
have excellent views along the Loch. Across the Loch is Ptarmigan Lodge and
above this is a track which traverses the hill through oak woodland. This is the
line of the West Highland Way, a long distance footpath running from Milngavie
(pronounced mullguy) to Fort William.
Loch Lomond is the largest area of fresh water in the UK. The deepest point
(600') is just off Rubha Mor. It supplies central Scotland with 100 million
gallons of soft clear water daily.
