Rosneath Point
From Meikleross Bay to Kilcreggan, the view across the Firth of Clyde includes
the sweep of Gourock, Greenock and Port Glasgow, towns once dominated by
shipbuilding and heavy engineering works with a world famous reputation for
quality. In contrast to the early years of the last century, very little of this
type of industry now survives on the Clyde.
From Portkil Point the view down the Clyde to Dunoon and the Cowal Peninsular
opens up. Dunoon Pier, like Helensburgh and Kilcreggan Piers, was much visited
by the pleasure steamers which cruised the Clyde in great numbers until the
1950's. All are still visited by the Waverly (the worlds last ocean going paddle
steamer) through July and August.
